What is Powder Metal?

਍ഀ
਍ഀ

Powder metal, ਍ഀ or PM, is a process for forming metal parts by heating compacted metal ਍ഀ powders to just below their melting points. Over the past quarter century ਍ഀ it has become widely recognized as a superior way of producing ਍ഀ high-quality parts for a variety of important applications due to the ਍ഀ advantages in material utilization, shape complexity, near-net-shape ਍ഀ dimensional control, which, in turn, yield benefits in lower costs and ਍ഀ greater versatility.

What are the advantages of PM?

਍ഀ
਍ഀ

As compared ਍ഀ to conventional HSS steel, PM has better toughness and is prone to less ਍ഀ chipping because it has small and uniformly distributed ਍ഀ particles.

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • It has ਍ഀ greater consistency in multi-spindle machines, where a single cutter ਍ഀ failure affects several spindlesPM technology ਍ഀ enhances grind ability with no reduction in wear resistance of the ਍ഀ tool. ਍ഀ
  • Availability of higher alloy grades that can not be produced in ਍ഀ conventional HSS. ਍ഀ
  • Much more ਍ഀ consistent tool performance will increase productivity by reducing ਍ഀ machining time. ਍ഀ
  • Compared ਍ഀ to carbide, PM is not as brittle and has higher removal rates by taking ਍ഀ heavy depths of cut and chip loads.
